BMS School Counseling

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step - Confucius

School counselors at Bow Memorial School provide services for students through a comprehensive, developmental model to promote student achievement personally, socially, and academically. The primary task of a school counselor is to provide both direct and indirect services in a school by means of individual and group counseling, classroom presentations, consultation, and collaboration. With all of these services, promoting a positive school climate is always at the forefront of our interactions with students and staff. It is through classroom instruction, daily communication with our students and school wide activities that we strive to reinforce the unique community of Bow Memorial, one that is welcoming, supportive and guiding.

Counseling Workshop

    Counseling Classes to Counseling Workshops

School Counselors assist in the personal/social, academic, and career development of all students. Direct service is integral to the role of the school counselor and is provided through individual student planning, multi student groups, and responsive services. Here in Bow, school counselors have the unique opportunity to also provide a highly developed counseling curriculum that is geared toward personal and social growth as an individual.

Counseling workshops are similar to meetings where individuals have the opportunity to engage in discussions around a specific topic, learning new information and reflecting on the information presented. These workshops align with our belief that personal and social growth and the learning that occurs in these areas cannot be defined by a grade. It is through reflection and self evaluation that students will begin to discuss, explore, and self evaluate the topics during each workshop.

    The Counseling Workshops

Students in 8th Grade will participate in a counseling workshop on specific topics. The delivery will be through the Specials rotations. During this 22 day rotation, students will engage in a collaborative meeting facilitated by the school counselor to explore the topic(s) (noted below), gaining and implementing strategies to foster personal, social, and academic growth. Due to the nature of the curriculum, students will receive a SP (successfully participated) mark when reporting out.

Specific topics that will be addressed over the 22 day workshop are:

    • Character Development
    • Goal Setting
    • Stress Management
    • Social Media
    • Transition to High School
    • Career Exploration
    Student Expectations:
    • Students will engage in various discussions and collaborative group activities to gain understanding of the topics presented.
    • Students will reflect on information as it pertains to their personal/social/academic growth and make connection to each year’s workshop.
    Facilitator Expectations:
    • The facilitator will provide information pertinent to the needs of the students on relevant topics.
    • The facilitator will provide opportunities of discussion and activities to further one’s understanding of topics as they relate to the student’s personal/social/academic growth.
